All of us spend a lot of the time in our homes, especially in the kitchen area. It is very possible to remodel your kitchen when you are a budget. Being a budget does not mean you cannot hire on a professional.

Kitchen designs by Laura are a great place to start. Laura has many years of experience in both kitchen and bathroom design and is ready to help you create the kitchen you want to have in your home, all while staying within your budget. You can visit her blog at http://ping.fm/bi8Ap anytime for ideas on how to remodel your kitchen or bathroom.

Laura’s site features the latest designs in appliances, back splash, cabinetry, counter tops, flooring, lighting and much more. Some things you need to consider before purchasing an appliance are price, quality, function, and space efficiency. Make sure you do your homework as buying an appliance on the spur of the moment can cost you big bucks that you may not have.

Metallic back splash is a very hot trend in kitchen remodeling today. Whether you choose stainless steel or copper, everyone will notice your new kitchen.

The cabinets in your kitchen are probably the most noticeable part in your entire kitchen so picking out the right ones are very important. Cabinets are not only exposed to moisture but also to heat when cooking. It is vitally important to choose a very durable material, one that will stand up to these elements and last a long time.

Granite counter tops are perfect for the kitchen. This type of counter top is very durable and is heat resistant, and is also resistant to scratches and spills.

New flooring will make almost any room look brand new. The most popular choices today for kitchen flooring are laminate, tiles, and hardwood. Having hardwood flooring in the kitchen area does require a lot of maintenance though so if you choose hardwood floors be prepared to take good care of them.

Last but not least the kitchen needs to have plenty of light. If you choose the wrong lighting for your kitchen it can make your kitchen appear much smaller than it actually is and also can affect your mood and your eyes.

Everything you need to remodel your kitchen or even your bathroom while on a budget can be found at Laura’s blog which is located at kitchencabinetryblog.com.

When planning a renovation, room size plays an important role in options to choose. For instance, a small kitchen remodel will ultimately need more careful planning than a wide spacious kitchen. The main reason is: the limited space to fit in appliances and cabinets, while ensuring a fair amount of counter space to make it a workable room.

Personal style plays a big role as well, though a common goal to achieve is to create the appearance of a larger room and to incorporate function. There are a few key points to consider while creating a plan that can help achieve greater results.

Cabinets – Choosing a lighter tone wood finish or paint will help to create the illusion of a larger space. Since there will inevitably be a lesser amount of room for cabinetry, adding Lazy Susan style, along with space saving slider shelving allows for maximizing storage space.

Appliances – Appliances come in many various sizes and colors. Lighter colors, again will add to creating a more open room. Keeping the size of the area in mind is very important in choosing refrigerators and stoves. The amount of people in the residence should be considered as well. Though, ultimately the more conservative one can be in selecting size, helps to ensure space to move around and keep the kitchen functional.

Walls and Floors – Deciding on color variations, it is often appealing to have a variation of tones present in a room for contrast. Staying with neutral tones will not only create great accent for the lighter appliances, it adds to a brighter room, with an appearance of being larger. When choosing tiles, larger sized tiles are best to open up a room, versus small blocks and clusters.

Even though there may be limiting options for a small kitchen remodel, there are also advantages too. They are much more reasonable to complete, many projects can be DIY, for even greater savings. Also, the options for accent pieces are enormous to ensure a personal touch, while having created a reasonable, functional, design.

Do no despair if you only have a small kitchen. These days it is quite common for home owners to have a small one. The important thing is that it’s functional. You can transform your kitchen into a functional one by getting practical tips on small kitchen design. You do not need a large kitchen especially if the kitchen is not an efficient one.

So many homeowners think that they need to give up a lot of things if they have a small kitchen. The truth is you don’t. You just need to be a little creative and try a different approach. Just because your kitchen is small does not mean that it should look it. There are several ways on making it look a little larger.

Usually interior designers will advise you to pick the right colors and accents. Consider neutral colors because it can create an illusion of space. Also add cabinet lighting because it does not only help you look for things in your kitchen but it makes it look larger and brighter too. It makes a whole lot of difference. Think of ways to make use of efficient storage such as lower and upper cabinets that extends all the way from the ceiling to the floor and shelves. You see all you need is a little creativity and planning when it comes to small kitchen design. Before you know it, your little nook and cranny will become the kitchen that you have always wanted to have because all you needed was the right design.

If you are in the process of building or remodeling a home, one of the most-used rooms in that residence is the kitchen. Because it is so often used, it becomes apparent very quickly when the area does not function in the ways you would like. This is when you want to look for kitchen design ideas for your kitchen that will improve not only its functionality but also its appearance for you and your family.

One of the big problem areas in many kitchens is not having enough storage, as well as not having storage where it is most needed. This can hamper your food preparation, and simply add to the time it takes to accomplish your daily chores here. Before you build or remodel your kitchen, spend some time thinking about where the major appliances and sink will be placed. These are also the spots in the kitchen where kitchen cabinets will be needed to store the items used on the stove or in the oven, for example, as well as other necessary appliance, equipment and food storage. One place that is often overlooked for kitchen cabinets is high up on the walls. If you make your cabinets go up as far as they can vertically, they take up no extra footprint yet provide a great deal more storage space for your use. Having ample storage space beside the refrigerator and sink areas will also make the room more convenient to use.

If you want to make a big bang in your kitchen’s appearance but do not want to spend the money to remodel the entire space, consider adding new cabinet doors to your existing cabinets. This can change the entire look of the room dramatically, along with a new set of door hardware, for a fraction of the cost of switching out the entire cabinet base. This can be a good option if your current cabinets are serviceable but you are simply tired of how they look. You could also take your existing cabinet doors in to a cabinet shop and have them refinished. This is another frugal option that can alter your kitchen’s look for the better while saving you money.

Molding is used quite often in kitchens in order to improve the appearance of the cooking area and there are many different designs and styles that can be easily used to make the kitchen completely unique and custom in appearance. You could go for just a few decorative touches or adding molding around the cabinet tops, the choice is all yours.

Adding custom crown molding to the top areas of the cabinets in order to give your kitchen a modern, custom look, you first need to measure the room where it will be installed. Don’t forget to buy enough molding to last you for the entire project, and an additional 10-15% that will help with fixing any mistakes or cutting waste. Some manufacturers might actually have pre-finished molding that match your actual cabinets, so it might be worth looking that option as well.

When you add molding to your cabinets you can either nail them directly or you could attach a thin particle board that will be used to attach the molding to instead of directly. This will also let you redecorate the cabinets in a different way later on if you so choose.

You can alternatively even glue it to the cabinet door fronts and this technique is especially useful and beautiful for painted kitchen cabinets. You can add first the molding and then re-paint the cabinets for a fresh touch.

Adding a chair rail is yet another way you can use them effectively to make your kitchen modern and unique. Or adding wainscoting to the lower wall parts first and then using the chair rail on the top might be also an interesting idea.

Do not be afraid to experiment as there are many possibilities of using molding to give your cooking area a very modern and beautiful look that it deserves.

By Richard McIntyre

Determining which type of kitchen designs are the best is subjective. This will often depend on the area of the house intended for the kitchen. Whichever layout plans you decide on, there are five basic features that every kitchen – including yours – should have.

Workflow is a very important feature that any kitchen should have. If yours is not designed to bring in efficient work, it is likely that you will spend majority of the time in the kitchen in order to make a single meal. Having one will also discourage one to be in the kitchen. You have to make sure that appliances are easily accessible as well as the kitchen tools and equipment and the ingredients, too. Otherwise, cooking and baking will seem like a daunting task that you or any member of the household will want to avoid.

Another feature that should be considered when looking for kitchen designs is the size. The size should help you determine how your kitchen will look like. There are certain kitchen designs that are fit just for bigger spaces and there are designs that are recommended for those with smaller areas in the house, too. You may also want to consider that too – bigger areas can be roomy but will require more effort to travel around while smaller areas make things easy to reach but it can become too crowded easily.

Layout is another feature to be decided when looking in on kitchen designs. L-shaped designs, a common layout, can help provide more efficiency when doing work because of the way it is designed and it takes up smaller space, too. However, if you want more storage capacity in the kitchen, you can also opt for the G-shaped or the U-shaped designs.

Although flooring does not seem much, it is actually another aspect in your kitchen that needs to be considered. Hardwood or tile floors may be opted – it just depends on your preference. However, the aesthetic value should not only be considered but the functionality and comfort level as well. If you are always on the kitchen (standing up constantly, perhaps), you may want to choose flooring materials that are more gentle on the feet and does not cause sore.

Lights are also another aspect in the kitchen designs that are often overlooked. Proper lighting will help in creating the best meals because things are much clearer to the one who is cooking. If the kitchen is too dark or too bright, it will be hard to get around the area. It will cause eyesore as well and doing things that involve the use of sharp objects, such as cutting or chopping ingredients, can be a dangerous and risky task.

When choosing from kitchen designs, make sure that all the features mentioned are being considered so that you will not face any problems in your kitchen in the future.
The kitchen is one of the most important places in the whole house and needs to be well lit, and providing sufficient lighting wherever you need it and that’s why people should always take kitchen lighting serious. Having the wrong lighting not only makes any size kitchen feel small but it can also have a negative effect on your moods and damage your eyes in the long run. Let’s face it the kitchen is the most social room in the house so investing in decent kitchen lighting will make a massive difference and make cooking a pleasure.

Of course there are many different kinds of lighting products on the market but how do we effectively employ them into our kitchens. One of the biggest mistakes a lot of people make with their kitchen lights is that they only use them in the center of the room which causes shadows to be thrown onto the walls behind the cupboards. Ideally you want to light up as much surface and wall area as possible.

So which fixtures and Kitchen lighting techniques work best? It all starts by understanding what types of lighting methods are available:

1. Task Lighting – This is the most important type as it directs light on specific areas where you need it most in your cooking like on counter tops and other indented areas.

2. Recessed Lighting – Fast becoming one of the more popular methods of lighting used in the kitchen, these fixtures are made to be installed in upper areas like cabinets but with the actual globe being incased or receding when viewed from the side. They are popular because they offer soft but sufficient lighting.

3. Accented Lighting – These are used to show specific areas in the kitchen like cutlery and glassware displays. These give the room a very aesthetic feel and definitely create a strong ambiance of calmness and space.

4. Cove Lighting – These kitchen lights are used to focus attention to areas around your ceiling that boast any shapes and curves. Strong attention to linear fixtures used together with reflectors will ensure the best results.

It all depends on your kitchen in the end as not all the above methods will work for just any kitchen. Keep your mind open to different ideas all the time. Focusing on kitchen island lighting will truly make it stand out and give your kitchen a multi dimensional feel. Add some soft pendant lighting fixtures over your kitchen island to create the desired effect. Installing some recessed lighting under your cabinets over your counter tops will create an illusion of space plus help you see what you’re doing.

Remodeling your home can be a gratifying experience. It can save you money but it can also be a nightmare. The more homework and leg work you do, the better your experience will be. Before you start any real work, think about using four strategies to manage your project:

1. Define clearly what you want to do and how
2. Establish a realistic and appropriate budget
3. Do a written project plan
4. Commit to staying within the budget

Finishing within budget is a well known challenge. The key is to stay within your objectives. If you were not going to install marble counters, don’t do it. If the tiles you like will cost three times what you budgeted, don’t use them. If your contractor thinks you should upgrade to a deluxe cabinet that costs twice what you budgeted, ask him to suggest something half the price. The only way you can stay in budget is by sticking to your objectives and executing your plan.

Today, contemporary kitchen designs are made for ultimate ease and comfort while meeting culinary needs. If redesigning your kitchen is the future for you, first research the type of style that fits your vision. Do you love a country theme with a dash of contemporary? Consider a buttermilk finish for your cabinets and contemporary lighting, finished with stainless steel appliances. Do you want something that’s a little less country and leans more on the contemporary side? Stainless steel appliances, a darker cabinet finish, and granite counter tops would be the perfect touch.

Recessed lighting is also a great way to illuminate your kitchen in a contemporary way instead of the standard one light that is typically put in homes. Bamboo hard wood flooring is becoming quite popular as well as a brushed nickel finish on the faucet. If you have a bar area, install drop lighting with a contemporary globe. That will add a little zest to the look.

Granite and marble countertops are quite popular, but there are also other options. Stainless steel is a newer option, but be careful as that type of surface will scratch easily and is hard to clean. Butcher block counter tops are also a good option if you do a lot of cooking.

Travertine flooring is the next wave of contemporary looks for your kitchen. Travertine comes in a variety of different colors from beige to gold. Something to consider about travertine in your kitchen, however, is that it is a natural stone and it will react with anything acidic such as orange juice, lemonade or any time of fruit juice. If those are typically in your kitchen, you might want to consider moving on to something a little sturdier.

Keep in mind as you’re envisioning your contemporary kitchen design that you should pick what best suits your needs and your taste. After the process is done, sit back and enjoy your new kitchen!
